A Hidden Gem in Livingstone: My 2-Night Stay at Taita Falcon Lodge

Discover Taita Falcon Lodge in Livingstone, Zambia—a romantic hidden gem overlooking the Zambezi Gorge. Read our 2-night experience with stunning views, gorge hikes, and exceptional service

If you’re looking for a truly unique escape near Livingstone—something intimate, romantic, and completely different from the usual safari lodge—this might just be it. I recently spent 2 nights (27th–29th April 2026) at Taita Falcon Lodge with my husband, and what started as a simple inspection trip quickly turned into one of the most memorable stays we’ve had in Zambia.

The Journey: Worth Every Bump

We drove from Lusaka to Livingstone, an 8-hour journey that was fairly smooth until the last stretch. The final 30 minutes on a dirt road leading to the lodge were a bit bumpy—but honestly, it added to the adventure. Passing through Mukuni Village, with locals warmly waving as you drive by, gives you a beautiful, authentic Zambian welcome.

By the time we arrived, we were exhausted—but the moment we stepped into reception and saw the Zambezi Gorge overlooking Rapid No. 17, famously known as “Double Trouble,” we forgot all about the long drive.

What made the arrival even more special was the level of care. I had texted Anna, the lodge manager, while on the dirt road expressing concern about the route. She immediately started organizing a team to come assist us. Thankfully, we made it just in time—but that gesture alone set the tone for the incredible service we experienced throughout our stay.

The Chalets: Rustic Luxury with a Wild View

The lodge has just 5 double chalets and 1 family chalet, making it incredibly intimate. We stayed in Chalet No. 4—and honestly, the view alone is worth the trip.

From our bed, balcony, and even the shower, we had uninterrupted views of Rapids 16 and 17. The sound of rushing water became our soundtrack—paired with birds chirping, it was pure serenity. One of the walls is partially netted, so at night, you can actually see the stars while lying in bed. It’s rustic, immersive, and incredibly romantic.

Comfort-wise, I’d rate it a solid 4/5:

  • Comfortable bed
  • Hot water shower + bathtub
  • Private balcony with breathtaking views
  • Peaceful natural sounds instead of artificial noise

But the real standout? That view. Unforgettable.

The Setting: Nature at Its Raw Best

Perched right on the edge of the Zambezi Gorge, the lodge overlooks Zimbabwe on the opposite side. Waking up here is something else—the combination of birdsong and the distant roar of the river is incredibly grounding.

My husband, who is a bird photographer, was in his element. The birdlife here is exceptional, and the dramatic landscape provides the perfect backdrop for photography.

Dining: Thoughtful, Personal & Delicious

We were on a full-board basis, with dinner served as a 3-course meal each evening—and every meal exceeded expectations.

As vegetarians with dietary restrictions, we were especially impressed. Chef Clement went above and beyond to ensure every dish was both delicious and satisfying. Service from John (bartender), Timothy, and the rest of the team was attentive without being intrusive.

The dining experiences were a highlight:

  • Night 1: Romantic dinner at the main restaurant
  • Night 2: A surprise candlelit dinner by the fire overlooking the valley and pool

That second evening truly sealed it for me—this place is perfect for honeymooners.

Activities: Adventure Meets Relaxation

Our second day started early—with a 5:00 AM wake-up call for a gorge hike. What stood out immediately was the attention to detail: we had requested coffee before the hike, and instead of serving it at the meeting point, it was delivered directly to our room. Small touch, big impact.

The hike itself:

  • Started at 6:15 AM
  • Steep, rocky, and physically demanding in parts
  • Took about 1 hour 15 minutes to descend

Our guide was incredibly patient, giving me time to catch my breath when needed. At the bottom, we reached the base of the Double Trouble rapids—standing at a dramatic 90-degree angle to the river. The sunrise reflecting over Zimbabwe was breathtaking.

A funny moment: my phone picked up a signal and I received a message from MTN saying, “Welcome to Zimbabwe.” That’s how close you are!

We rested, had fruits and water brought by John, and then made our way back up—faster, but with a few more “breath breaks.”

Later that day:

  • We headed into Livingstone for meetings and a visit to Victoria Falls
  • Returned for a relaxed sundowner with snacks and drinks
  • Watched the sky turn deep orange and red

The lodge strikes a perfect balance—light adventure with a strong focus on relaxation

Service: Simply Exceptional

From start to finish, the service was flawless. What stood out:

  • Proactive communication and care (even before arrival)
  • Personalized touches throughout the stay
  • Warm, friendly, and professional staff

It felt less like a hotel and more like being hosted.

Value for Money

Absolutely worth it.

This is not just a place to sleep—it’s an experience. If you’re a couple, honeymooner, or simply someone looking to disconnect from the noise of everyday life, this is ideal.

There are:

  • No TVs in the rooms
  • Limited network
  • Wi-Fi only in public areas

And honestly? That’s the beauty of it. It forces you to slow down. For the first time in months, I saw my husband take a book to bed—and that says a lot

    Pros & Cons

    What I loved most:

    • The unmatched views of the Zambezi Gorge
